Life Skills means skills (aptitude) and confidence (attitudes) needed to enjoy a successful life. When children reach a age (usually about 7-8 years old) we certainly have more emphasis on laying off rather than holding throughout so tight. Now it's time to let them have a lot freedom to solve individualized problems.
